The Binational Fulbright Commission in Egypt is now accepting applications for the Joint Supervision Ph.D. Grant. This fully funded opportunity supports Ph.D. students enrolled at Egyptian universities to conduct part of their dissertation research at a U.S. university under the joint supervision of an Egyptian and an American professor.

🌍 Program Overview:

Selected candidates spend one academic year at a U.S. university conducting Ph.D. research under the supervision of a U.S.-based co-supervisor. The U.S. co-supervisor will later travel to Egypt to attend the student’s thesis defense (within two years after the student’s return).

Grant Benefits:

  • Round-trip travel allowance

  • Monthly stipend

  • Health insurance coverage

  • University tuition

  • Travel & per diem allowance for U.S. co-supervisor (to attend thesis defense in Egypt)

  • Additional allowances

🎯 Eligibility Criteria:

  • Must be a citizen of Egypt and reside in Egypt throughout the process.

  • Must be enrolled in a Ph.D. program at an Egyptian university.

  • Strong academic record.

  • Must secure a U.S. co-supervisor at an accredited university in the same field who is willing to host and supervise research.

  • Must obtain:

    • Invitation letter from the U.S. co-supervisor (including research plan, supervision commitment, and available research facilities).

    • Letter of support from Egyptian Ph.D. supervisor(s) (including thesis evaluation and approval to travel).

  • Applicants must complete all application, selection, and pre-departure steps successfully.

🚫 Not Eligible:

  • U.S. citizens or green card holders

  • Employees of the U.S. Department of State, USAID, or Fulbright-affiliated organizations (and their families, up to the fourth degree)


📄 Required Documents:

  • Online Application Form

  • Academic transcripts (in English)

  • Proof of Ph.D. enrollment at an Egyptian university

  • Letter of support from Egyptian Ph.D. supervisor(s)

  • Invitation letter from a U.S. co-supervisor

  • Abridged thesis proposal

  • Evaluation of the proposal by both supervisors

  • Three recommendation letters

  • Portfolio (for applicants in Arts or Architecture)

  • Valid National ID (scan)

  • Personal photo

  • Copies of previous U.S. J1/J2 visas (if applicable)
